I’m Colleen and I’m back for another live stream brought to you by Princess Dental Staffing and I’m so happy you could be here with me today and happy hump day–we are halfway through the week! We’re almost there stay strong!

So respect applies to things such as cultural background, different ethnicity, race, sex and gender, sexual orientation and all those different classes.

What is respect?

So what I want to do first is I want to talk about what respect is. Let’s define respect. I actually did a video about two or three weeks ago and it was a video concerning creating a culture of respect in the workplace.

In that video, I just find there’s a lot of great information in that video and I define respect by using the definition I found on dictionary.com basically respect is understanding the value and the work of another person okay so that’s what respect is so another thing that I wanted to find for you another term that I want to bring up and define for you with cultural competency as dental hygienist we firmly come across this term before it’s relatively new but basically a cultural competency I found a great definition on the 88 sorry ADEA org website that’s the American Dental Education Association so they have the create definition for cultural competency cultural competency a person’s ability to understand and interact with people from cultures and backgrounds other than their own okay so that’s basically what cultural competency is now normally we talk about cultural competency a lot of the times it is restricted to specifically culture national origin race ethnicity and those sorts of things it doesn’t always necessarily include things like religion or sexual orientation or things like that but I think there are a lot of great principles and cultural competency that can be a across the board okay and there are definitely some educational resources that you can find online regarding cultural competency so I encourage you to google it and check those things out you type so there’s a little bit about respect and cultural competency why is it important for dental hygienists to demonstrate respect in the workplace okay so

I found this great excerpt from this article article called how hygienists can bridge cultural differences during appointments and it’s available on the RDH Today website.

okay so I’m just going to read this excerpt and real quick and awareness of our patients beliefs and cultural practices as it pertains to oral health makes us a better health care professional it is never a one-size-fits-all approach for our patients with that knowledge we can connect better to our patients so that’s why it’s important for dental hygienists to demonstrate respect and cultural competency towards their patients right because it makes you a better healthcare professional if you can understand your patients views and practices when it comes to oral health you can better you know assess their oral health and come up with treatment plans that are fit that that fit them best right that’s why it’s important to demonstrate respect towards your patients it’s also important to demonstrate respect towards your co-workers your management and everyone else in the office right and the reason for that is because if you demonstrate respect for your co-workers and management it helps support a team environment a cohesive and effective office environment and operations okay in addition demonstrating disrespect in the workplace towards your co-workers in your management could potentially be viewed as creating a hostile work environment which is a violation of the Civil Rights Act so it could potentially hit you in legal hot water demonstrating disrespect okay so you know always important to demonstrate respect towards your co-workers and management not only because it could potentially get you in legal hot water but again just to help the court that cohesive and that cohesive in that effective team environment right nobody wants to go to work when they feel like they’re being disrespected or they don’t feel that other people can see their worth in their value and what they bring to the office okay so so that’s a little bit about respect cultural competency and why it’s important for dental hygienists to demonstrate that respect for their patients and towards their co-workers so like I said I did a video probably about two or three weeks ago about creating a culture of respect in the workplace so I really encourage you to watch that video if you haven’t already it has some really great tips and advice for creating that culture of respect when we’re looking through the lens of cultural competency and demonstrating respect for you know sex and gender sexual orientation religion etc and all those different classes I would add two more items to that list that I mentioned on that video okay so firstly my advice don’t ever assume things about people for in my experience it’s always better to allow someone else to tell you who they are and what their beliefs and their practices are and how they see the world always allow somebody that that opportunity to to express themselves to you okay never assume things about people and the second thing that I would advise is and this really helped me out when I was an HR specialist back before I became a freelancer when I was an HR specialist it really helped me communicate with management and with employees regarding demonstrating respect the golden rule okay if you don’t want it said about you if it’s if it’s going to hurt your feelings to say if somebody says it to you it’s probably best not to say to somebody about somebody to somebody else okay because they’re probably going to feel the exact same wheel way you would feel if somebody said it to you

Okay so so that will do it for me today everyone if you have any other thoughts on dental hygienists and how to demonstrate respect in the workplace in regards to the various classes feel free to comment on this video as a matter of fact I encourage you to do so but thanks for tuning in today everyone and if you couldn’t tune in when this is live so glad you got to watch it later I will see you tomorrow. Have a wonderful day!

Okay if you don’t want it said about you if it’s if it’s going to hurt your feelings to say if somebody says it to you it’s probably best not to say to somebody about somebody to somebody else okay because they’re probably going to feel the exact same wheel way you would feel if somebody said it to you okay so so that will do it for me today everyone if you have any other thoughts on dental hygienists and how to demonstrate respect in the workplace in regards to the various classes feel free to comment on this video as a matter of fact I encourage you to do so but thanks for tuning in today everyone and if you couldn’t tune in when this is live so glad you got to watch it later I will see you tomorrow.
