First let’s talk a little bit about problem solving. Problem solving is another one of those phrases that is a little bit more than just surface, right? It’s a little bit more involved, sort of like listening skills, leadership skills, or communication skills.
Problem solving involves a lot more than what it just says. So let’s break it down…
What is problem solving…?
Exactly what it is problem solving?
First and foremost, when it comes to problem solving, you have to be able to define the problem. You have to be able to define the problem and also find out what is causing the problem.
So that part of the process might be you might’ve heard terms like troubleshooting or root cause analysis so basically all that means is defining the problem and also using a little bit of analysis to figure out what is causing the problem.
If that first part is kind of very analytical in nature and then the second part of course is the solving of the problem and that indicates a little bit of creativity and analysis in coming up with possible solutions and potentially then implementing those solutions to solve the problem.
When we talk about problem solving, we’re talking about someone who is analytical. Someone who is creative and innovative and being able to define the problem, form a solution for the problem.
Why problem solving is important
So that’s what problem-solving is. Now why is it important for our dental hygienist to have problem-solving skills?
It is especially important for them to have problem-solving skills because on the one hand, the job is very technical. You’re working with a lot of different equipment–x-rays cleaning equipment and then a lot of computer systems and office office appliances and that sort of thing and in order to be able to do your job you have to be able to troubleshoot and for all the problem when the problem presents right and then on the other hand there needs to be a certain aspect of creativity when working with your customers because sometimes customers present problems to you that are not so easily solvable and that are not so run-of-the-mill.
